What is PODD?
PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display) is a communication system designed to support individuals who use AAC. A PODD book or device organizes vocabulary in a predictable, systematic way so communicators can quickly find and express what they want to say.
PODD is built around real communication needs: greeting, requesting, commenting, joking, telling stories, and more. Each page is arranged according to pragmatic functions, helping communicators participate in natural, meaningful interactions throughout the day.
PODD can be used in:
- Low-tech paper books
- High-tech electronic AAC devices
- Hybrid systems
Across formats, PODD keeps vocabulary, navigation, and organization consistent, so communication partners and AAC users can learn and grow together.
Why PODD?
PODD (Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display) provides a structured, consistent way for AAC users to communicate across all environments. PODD organizes language so communicators can express anything they want to say, not just make choices.
A PODD system helps:
- Reduce frustration by offering predictable navigation
- Support real conversations, not scripted interactions
- Model robust language for emerging communicators
- Build communication autonomy across home, school, and community
- Ensure consistency between low-tech (non-electronic) and high-tech (electronic) AAC setups
PODD is more than a set of pages...it’s a communication philosophy that empowers individuals to communicate meaningfully, whenever and wherever they need.
